This unique work was handcrafted by skilled artisans in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, Brazil, using traditional local techniques, and was produced for the exhibition Ai Weiwei RAIZ at OCA, Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo (October 20, 2018–January 20, 2019).
Created in Brazil, the work takes on a particular resonance within the country’s visual culture. Its carved hand form may invite an association with the figa, the hand-shaped amulet long present in Brazilian popular tradition as a symbol of protection and good fortune. While not necessarily a direct reference, this visual correspondence adds another possible layer to the work’s relationship with the local traditions and craftsmanship surrounding its production.
