Untitled

Bruno Gambone — Italian (1936–2021)

Untitled, 1967

Oil on canvas, polyptych
40 × 40 in. (101.6 × 101.6 cm)

Created in 1967, Untitled belongs to the final year of Bruno Gambone’s formative New York period, when painting was central to his practice. Living and working in New York from 1962 to 1967, Gambone developed a geometric language exploring color, structure, and space before becoming internationally celebrated for his ceramics.

It was also in New York that Gambone met Rio de Janeiro–based gallerist Alfredo Bonino, whose galleries connected New York, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro. In 1967, Gambone’s paintings, including this work, were exhibited at Galeria Bonino in Rio, placing this body of work within a transatlantic dialogue between Italy, New York, and Brazil.
