José Zanine Caldas
Móveis Artísticos Z, Brazil, c. 1948–49
Pau marfim and pequi wood, retaining their original geometric woven upholstery
30 × 20 × 18 in. (76.2 × 50.8 × 45.7 cm) each
A pioneering figure of Brazilian modernism, José Zanine Caldas (1919–2001) brought an architectural sensibility and deep appreciation of native woods to furniture design.
Created during the formative years of Móveis Artísticos Z, the “Scissors” chair is distinguished by its dynamic crossed supports and dynamic construction. This early pair, dating to circa 1948–49, retains its original geometric woven upholstery, preserving an important element of Zanine’s original design.
